Shopping
The Cottage is located close to the town of Marsh Harbour (map in google), where you will find a complete range of US, English, and Bahamian foods, including imported fruits and vegetables and local conch and crawfish. | ![]() |
![]() | Marsh Harbour has several supermarkets and convenience stores, as well as fishmongers, bakeries, hardware stores, pharmacies and banks. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm for shops and 9am-3pm for banks. |
Dining outThe best place to dine on the island is on the veranda of The Cottage; but if you insist on dining out, here are a few of our favourite restaurants: Absolute Number One is Mangoe's, whose view over the harbour is unrivalled, and the food here is mouth-watering, sumptuous, and world-class. | ![]() |
Wallie's is across the street, and is an elegant restaurant in a stately colonial villa. Their terrace overlooks a lush tropical garden with rare palm trees. Not far away is Sapedilly's, a simpler abode for snacks and cold drinks. Hummingbird, Memorial Plaza: delicious food served at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Neat cigar bar. You can also find a nice meal at the Boat Harbour Marina.
CurrencyLegal tender is the Bahamian dollar. The US dollar is also considered legal tender in the Bahamas, and exchanges at a one-to-one rate with the Bahamian dollar. Most establishments accept Visa and MasterCard, as well as travellers cheques (best in small denomination) in US dollars. | ![]() |
When visiting the smaller islands, take credit cards, travellers cheques or cash, as there are few ATMs or banks available. There are no restrictions on the amount of US$ you can bring into the Bahamas.
Medical Care
There are several private doctors and dentists in Marsh Harbour, as well as a large Government Clinic. Pharmacies (Chemist Shops) can fill US prescriptions, and over-the-counter drugs can usually be found in supermarkets and drug stores. In case of emergency, charter planes to West Palm Beach, or an air ambulance from Miami can be called for evacuation. Be sure you bring your medical insurance cards with you, as air evacuation is very expensive.
Getting around Marsh Harbour
When you first arrive at the airport, take a taxi to The Cottage. Rates are reasonable, and taxi drivers are a good source of information.
After settling into The Cottage, you can choose between renting a boat, a bicycle, a scooter or a car. For the latter, the minimum driving age is 17 and you need a valid driving licence.
Whatever mean of transportation you choose, don't forget that Bahamians maintain the British custom of driving on the left hand side of the road!
